Deep Tissue Massage

Deep Tissue Massage works through tension, layer by layer, reaching the deeper muscles where persistent discomfort can be released. Much of the work is focused on bringing the body back into balance by working on the fascia—the soft tissue component of the connective tissue system of the body. The work is usually localized, and the client must be relaxed to reach deep tissues. The pressure starts lightly, but progresses to the deepest level the client can tolerate. This approach can be either corrective or generally therapeutic. Deep Tissue Massage targets specific areas of concern to alleviate symptoms of nerve impingement, muscle tears and sprains, and chronic muscular pain.

Lymphatic Drainage Massage

Lymphatic Drainage Massage is a profoundly gentle, connective tissue massage technique that assists the movement and direction of lymphatic fluid through the lymphatic system and into the bloodstream. The lymphatic system is responsible for draining those substances that cannot be reabsorbed readily by the venous blood system. The pumping action of the massage causes small capillaries to open and close, enhancing reabsorption of lymph from the tissues back into the lymphatic vessels. This technique helps reduce edema or tissue fluid retention, and decongests lymphatic pathways. The repetitive and soothing movements also stimulate pain-inhibitory reflexes.

Myofascial Release is a manual form of stretching that treats connective tissue restricted from overuse, trauma/injury, scar tissue and inactivity. It creates space in the soft tissue by following the direction of the restrictions with a sustained pressure to support the release.

Swedish Massage

Swedish Massage is the classic style of bodywork. Also called Western massage, it is the most popular and familiar massage method being practiced today, and has served as a foundation for many of the massage techniques developed in recent years.

Swedish massage is a scientific system of manipulations on the muscles and connective soft tissue of the body for the purpose of relaxation, rehabilitation, and health maintenance. It is comprised of five basic strokes and their variations: effleurage (sliding or gliding), petrissage (kneading), friction (cross fiber), percussion (rhythmic tapping), and vibration.

TMJ (temporomandibular joint) Dysfunction Massage

During TMJ massage, pressure points are manipulated in the jaw muscles to help relieve spasms, eliminate fluid congestion, and improve jaw mobility. A combination of massage techniques address tightness in the shoulders, neck, face and arms with the goal of offering relief, increasing blood flow to the muscles and elevating endorphin levels to further reduce the client’s pain and stress. Lymphatic Drainage techniques are used in combination with deeper tissue techniques.

Clinical & Oncology Massage

Clinical Massage is the ability to treat specific conditions or diagnosis. It is still the manipulation of soft tissue, but the focus is to achieve an outcome of therapeutic benefit using gentle touch techniques. Relaxation massage has clinical value, but a clinical massage is often area specific and not full body. Aggressive chemotherapy treatments can cause secondary conditions and side effects, such as pain sensitivity and peripheral neuropathy. Specific techniques can help to alleviate these conditions, producing a relaxing, analgesic effect, and/or encourage feeling back in neuropathic extremities. If you have ever had a cancer diagnosis, it is imperative to seek a massage therapist with this training. As an oncology trained massage therapist I will adjust the treatment session to accommodate your physical and medical limitations.

Complete Decongestive Therapy

Involving compression bandaging, manual lymphatic drainage, good nutrition and daily exercise.

Compression bandaging with short-stretch bandages, is a common and often necessary component for best outcomes with lymphedema, particularly after cancer surgery. External compression on a daily basis is required to increase tissue pressure and facilitate venous reabsorption of fluids. To prevent the reaccumulation of fluid, compression supports the skin and tissues. Daily exercise also affects surrounding muscles to act as pumping mechanisms essential for venous and lymphatic return.

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) assists the compression of soft tissue and is a hallmark to the reduction of edema/lymphedema. It directly stimulates the lymphatic system and also indirectly stimulates the vascular system. Additionally, analgesic effects of MLD are well documented with regards to stimulating the autonomic nervous system and can provide sedative relief.

Post-surgical effects of MLD include prevention from infection, pain reduction, and reduction of edema and bruising.
